Insights
What led you to do the work you do? After working for 3 years at an international CPA firm, I realized I enjoyed serving smaller clients where I could have a greater impact. I found Gilbert and started workings in the nonprofit, private business, and employee benefit plan sectors of their audit practice and it has been a perfect fit.
Describe your ideal client: A nonprofit or private business with $1M or more in annual revenue that needs audit, review, or financial consulting services. We do serve clients that are smaller, but the cost of an audit or review can be cost prohibitive for organizations with small budgets. An ideal client has a good accounting system already in place, but is receptive to suggestions and improvement. We can’t start auditing a client whose books are a mess, but we can refer them to someone who can help them clean up their records before we start.
What situation or circumstances might lead a prospective client to your services? Some nonprofits or employee benefit plans are required to have audits once they reach a certain size. A funder or lender may require an audit or a review before providing a grant or loan. An organization’s board may feel more comfortable that they are meeting their fiduciary duty by having an outside CPA firm perform and audit or a review. Often a prospective client is seeking our services because they are unhappy with their current provider.
What’s the best way for colleagues to refer prospective clients to you? Pass on my email address (mkrehe@gilbertcpa.com) or have them call our office 916-646-6464 and ask for Matt Krehe.
How does a typical engagement begin? We would start with a meeting to determine their needs, scope of the work and timing. We want to make sure we are providing the service that makes the most sense for their particular organization.
What might you be doing if you hadn’t pursued this career? Farming with my dad.
What about your work gives you greatest satisfaction? My greatest satisfaction is a grateful client, that lets us know they appreciate the work that we did and that they received some valuable recommendations from us.
What might your colleagues be surprised to learn about you? I spent a lot of time working on my family’s rice, walnut, and prune farm in Yuba City as a kid and through college and received my bachelor’s degree in Crop Science.
