Insights
What led you to do the work you do? After college, I worked in corporate human resources for a large bank in Los Angeles and loved all the workplace issues I was exposed to; I knew I wanted to go to grad school and so I chose law and focused on employment law – it was either going to be that or intellectual property law, but I didn’t have the tech background for intellectual property… and loved employment law because for many people employment is such a large part of a person’s identity.
What situation or circumstances might lead a prospective client to your services? An employer gets sued by one or more current or former employees for harassment, discrimination, retaliation, misclassification, failure to properly pay wages and all the other claims employees can make and needs legal counsel to represent/defend it; The employer needs preventative advice on how to handle a workplace issue such as a termination, layoff, or request for an accommodation, discipline, etc. and seeks legal advice.
What services might a typical engagement include? Employment law advice & counsel on all types of workplace issues from discipline/discharge, to leaves of absence/reasonable accommodations, to wage compliance; Defense of litigation matters ranging from single plaintiff/employee litigation (wrongful termination, sexual harassment, discrimination, retaliation, etc.) to class action / representative lawsuits; Representing employers in union matters and administrative matters before the EEOC, DFEH and the California Labor Commissioner; Preparation of Employee Handbooks and other workplace documents
